Why we don’t need preachers or teachers joining New Life Church Middlesbrough

We are currently looking to add a couple of gospel workers to our team, we are advertising via the FIEC Jobs section and we are appealing through social media and partner churches for men, women and families to consider moving to Middlesbrough and become members of New Life Church.

Last time we advertised, I tried to lure gifted preachers and aspiring church planters to Middlesbrough by putting a spin on the fact that we have a small church membership, that I was the only preacher and that we have a tough mission field. I advertised that we had:

“ An opportunity for the right candidate to train for eldership, and preach regularly in an exciting and growing church plant.”

The advert brought about many enquiries from people who wanted to preach and teach, but only two people responded who were willing to join us, get their sleeves rolled up and their hands dirty.

The problem was that I didn't need the type of people I was trying to attract, we didn't need people to train as elders, to preach or to lead bible studies. What we needed (and still need now) was people to open up their homes and have someone round for a meal and chill out together watching a film, we needed people who would organise a social or a bbq at the local park, we needed people with a driving licence to give people a lift and we needed people with good organisational skills to plan events such as mission trips and members meetings.

Basically we needed and still need anyone who is willing to join our church to serve, learn and share their lives and homes with us and the wider community.

Hopefully we will see godly men raised up into eldership from within the church and I am already training people to preach and teach, (we currently have four men who are able to preach and lead bible studies) as we run regular courses at the church, so that every member has the opportunity to learn how to handle and teach the bible well, but what I can’t train is people to have a desire to serve, to be hospitable and to live in a 24/7 gospel community.

So that is why we don’t need preachers or teachers joining New Life Church Middlesbrough, we need servants, brothers and sisters, friends and family members to join us, people who are willing to talk about Jesus in their homes, their cars and in the community before they talk about him from the pulpit.
